The exhibition, "Afterglow: Jade Hoyer and Lauren Cardenás" is on view at Glassell Gallery located in the Shaw Center for the Arts through December 15, 2024.

Artists Jade Hoyer and Lauren Cardenás explore multi-racial identity and belonging. They reflect on their shared experiences as first-generation Americans raised in the Catholic faith, and they seek connection to their ancestral heritage obscured through colonialism, immigration, and assimilation.

Hoyer and Cardenás use the visual language of Catholicism—gold script, saints, and ex-votos—to connect with their mother’s beliefs and evoke that devotion. But they appropriate this iconography to resist affronts to reproductive healthcare and inequities in healthcare labor. Hoyer considers nursing as a historic and ongoing immigration pathway for Filipina women—and, pointedly, the inequities of healthcare labor during the Covid pandemic. Cardenás’ gloved hands reflect on her Mexican heritage. The hands demand an end to attacks on women’s reproductive rights, including proposed use of the Comstock Act to further limit access to reproductive healthcare. Summoning the devotion of their mothers with prayers, symbols, and mantras such as “Protect Me” and “Give Me Strength,” these works invoke protection for all.

The “Artists in Conversation” series places LSU faculty artists in conversation with visiting artist peers to bring diverse perspectives on lived experiences, creative practices, and building artistic communities. Jade Hoyer is a 2024 Artist Practitioner Fellow at Brown University’s Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America, and an assistant professor of art at Carleton College. Lauren Cardenás is an assistant professor of art at LSU School of Art.
