J’Ouvert is a festival that takes place in many countries in the West Indies. For a lot of our nations, it is the biggest celebration of the year. J’Ouvert typically features calypso/soca bands. It is typically associated with the emancipation of slavery in the islands in 1838, which granted afro-Caribbeans the opportunity to participate in carnival and embrace it as an expression of their newfound freedom. WISA is excited to bring this integral part of our culture to LSU to be celebrated by our community.
