View map Free EventJoin us for a discussion of LSU’s strong history of producing science-based plays and a preview of the upcoming LSU SciArts Playfest, which is a collaboration between the College of Music & Dramatic Arts and the College of Science to host a national competition for science-based plays. The event will culminate in three leading playwrights coming to LSU for workshops and staged readings of their plays. In this edition of Science Café, you will hear from LSU faculty members Vince LiCata, George Judy, and Vastine Stabler as they discuss science plays produced at LSU over the years and what makes a “good science play.” The SciArtists will also provide a preview of the plays to be presented at the upcoming LSU SciArt Playfest.
About the Speakers
Vince LiCata is a faculty member in the LSU Department of Biological Sciences. He has produced several science-based plays at LSU and had plays produced across the U.S. and in England, Scotland, Germany, and Thailand.
George Judy is a faculty member at the LSU School of Theater. He is an actor, director, writer, and educator who has directed many science-based plays at LSU, is a member of Actor’s Equity and the Screen Actors Guild, and is the previous artistic director of Swine Palace Theatre.
Vastine Stabler is the Managing Artistic Director of Swine Palace Theatre. He obtained his MFA in directing from LSU and has directed over 40 productions at LSU and in the Southeast, including "Always Patsy Cline, " "Noises Off," and "To Kill a Mockingbird," among many others. He has been associated in one way or another with managing Swine Palace Theatre for over 25 years. He has also served as President/Artistic Director of Birmingham Festival Theatre and Southern Playworks.
