Join us for a hybrid live and online LSU Science Café with a faculty researcher.

About this event

Like many areas located in energy corridors, human-induced earthquakes occur in Louisiana. Join LSU Department of Geology & Geophysics Assistant Professor Patricia Persaud to learn more about her research studying earthquakes in Louisiana, which is the first to provide robust high-resolution seismic data and 3D mapping of specific areas in Louisiana where the Earth’s crust is changing due to natural and human causes.

About the Speaker

Patricia Persaud is an assistant professor of geophysics at LSU. She graduated from the University of Houston with a BS in geophysics and holds a PhD in geophysics from California Institute of Technology. She was a Postdoctoral Science Fellow at Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and a 2020-21 fellow of the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University. She is an NSF CAREER award recipient. She has pioneered methods for geophysical imaging beneath megacities, such as Los Angeles, with large arrays of instruments to help improve earthquake hazard assessment in densely populated areas. She also monitors earthquake activity at an active volcanic island in Italy and underground salt caverns in Louisiana and uses signals from unusual ground motions to understand changes beneath the Earth’s surface. Her group uses information from holes drilled deep into the Earth to determine how it is likely to deform when stresses build up.

LSU Science Café is presented in partnership with WRKF.
