My Potential was Anonymous: A Critical Race Analysis of Black Males’ Educational Experiences

Brooms will be presenting on his research that investigates Black males’ educational experiences. Using BlackCrit Theory, his presentation will examine Black males’ educational narratives and the ways in which anti-Blackness and Blackmaleness – the combined impact of their racialized and gendered identities – are perpetuated within higher education, both of which often deny support and opportunities to Black male students, repositions them away from success, and influences the meanings they draw and efforts they engage in pursuing their educational goals. He also will focus on their agency, resistance, and resilience and the need to transform educational praxis and institutional cultures.
