The LSU‐FETI Recruit Fire Academy course is designed for entry‐level firefighters and is taught under the same paramilitary chain of command used in today’s fire departments.
Most often students are already hired by a fire department, or in some cases they may be sponsored by a department. Individuals are allowed to take the training and certification process as “independents” on their own. (Please review “Non‐Sponsored Student” section on page 3 if applicable). To enter the LSU‐FETI Recruit Fire Academy, students must be prepared to successfully complete the LSU‐FETI Physical Ability Test given on the Orientation Day that indicates the student’s physical ability to complete the program. Each recruit will be put through a rigorous physical training program due to the demands of the fire service. Therefore, LSU‐FETI recommends that the recruits start a training program before attending the course.
The material covered in this Academy fulfills the requirements for BLS/CPR, Emergency Medical Responder, Hazardous Materials Awareness (NFPA 1072), Hazardous Materials Operations (NFPA 1072), Fire Fighter I and II (NFPA 1001), Vehicle Extrication, and Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator – Pumper (NFPA 1002). The material is presented at an appropriate pace.
