Stitches in Time: Quilts & Fashion explores the enduring dialogue between quilt making and dress. Nineteenth and twentieth-century quilts are juxtaposed with quilted fashions to highlight connections in technique, color, and historical moment. At the heart of the exhibition is a remarkable recent gift from Sylvia R. Karasu, MD, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medicine, a collection of garments by legendary American designer and Louisianian, Geoffrey Beene. These pieces represent Beene's enduring attention to craftsmanship, fabrication, and quilting as a means of elevating design and detail in high-end fashion.
