Billy Bigelow, a troubled carnival barker, and Julie Jordan, a naive millworker, suffer through daily hardships and society’s disapproval of their relationship. After learning Julie is pregnant, Billy commits a robbery to provide for her, but is caught and takes his own life in despair. The heavens grant Billy a chance to return to Earth for one day, where he encounters his daughter Louise and discovers a chance to redeem himself.
