About this Event
As evidenced by Hurricane Ida, wind and the damage it can cause should not be underestimated. That is why LSU Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering Associate Professor Aly Mousaad Aly has built a powerful wind laboratory that is one-of-a-kind in the world. The LSU Open Jet Facility has the capability of producing up to category 4 hurricane winds to test wind-resistance for homes, commercial buildings, and energy infrastructure to improve resilience.
About the Speaker
Aly Mousaad Aly is an associate professor at LSU. His research aims at creating fundamental knowledge in wind engineering, dynamics, and control to build more resilient, economic, and recoverable energy and coastal infrastructure that can enhance safety and reduce the huge cost of rebuilding after windstorms and earthquakes. Aly established the LSU Windstorm Impact, Science, and Engineering (WISE) research and education program (wise.lsu.edu). His research enables advanced wind testing, by meeting the challenge of yielding loads that mimic full-scale true physics. His research advanced the implementation of smart dampers in super-tall structures and led to a novel probabilistic theory that enables the analytical modeling of the semi-active damping technology. Aly holds a PhD from Polytechnic University of Milan (Italy) and worked as a research fellow at Western University (Canada) and a research associate at the International Hurricane Research Center in Miami.
LSU Science Café is presented in partnership with WRKF.
