Summary:
Graduate students provide much of the one-on-one mentoring for undergraduate and high school students working in research labs. The mentor-protégé relationship that is developed through these research experiences are critical to the success of the research endeavor, the development of the protégé as a researcher, and the development of the mentor as the leader of a research group. However, few graduate students receive intentional development in mentoring. Moreover, the skills needed to lead diverse teams aren’t regularly cultivated among graduate students. Diverse research teams are proven to perform better. So, training mentors to work in diverse teams and thread the concepts of diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout their leadership and mentoring philosophies are essential to the success of future research and innovation. Recognizing this, the College of the Coast and Environment, the College of Science, and LA Sea Grant brought together a team of experienced faculty and graduate students to develop this training and give participants the tools to be effective mentors in a diverse research environment. This seminar will discuss the development of this mentor training experience.
